I love creating lesson plans-however the process can be very time consuming! Every campus, principal and even school district has their own way of submitting lesson plans. Nowadays, they are submitted online, meaning that there is a provided template to use. I have created lesson plans in Triand and Eduphoria-very time consuming. After adding in all the required information, I am not able to follow the plans in my teaching. So, what I did was to create my own very simple template. I can refer back to it while teaching, to see what is next in my lessons. It is a lesson plan template that I can read and follow and takes little time to add to and change each week.
I also have created 4 weeks of plans for each month, instead of dating the lesson plans. This is so that I can easily refer back to them based on the month and not the exact date that it was taught the previous year. So, September has Week 1, 2, 3, and 4 and October has Week 1, 2, 3 and 4…and so on. I designed the template to include the main activity that the students will do. This helps me to know the materials that I need to prepare and have ready for the week.

I have begun creating a new style of plans, similar to those above. I am actually in the process of writing a Kindergarten curriculum, similar to the one that I used in my Houston Public School. As a curriculum specialist, I am in the process of extensivley researching the best methods and formats for teaching letters and sounds and Reading! To get these FREE lesson plans…go to the page tab at the top of my home page and click on “My Favorite Lesson Plans-Month by Month.” I labeled them by month so that you can begin them when you want. However they do build one upon another. You can even skip a whole month if your children already know their letter and sounds and can sound out simple CVC words. Teaching Reading and Phonics can be tricky and confusing. -Andrea

I just got so busy. Our school district moved to a new online lesson planner. It took hours to input one subject level for an entire week. So, my own “real” lesson plans that I normally typed up (since the online ones were too many pages)…unfortunately took the sidelines. I am so sorry and will try to update it better soon! Hello – I also have an overview of how I taught the skills throughout the year. It starts from letter sounds to sight words, then word families. It is on the top of homepage, under the CURRICULUM tab and then scroll down to the CURRICULUM TIMELINE 2010-2011. It has the complete order. I’m sure this will a good guide for you. My school in Houston followed this order and I just made my own “easy to read timeline” out of it. It is all based on Texas standards, which I must add are a bit harder than other states.

Each year, my schedule changes based on when my lunch, PE, library and other “Special” times are. I also change my daily schedule at least 5-10 times until I get it “just right.” Each week, I turn in a new schedule with my lesson plans and I bet my principal just shakes her head thinking “oh gosh, another new schedule from Mrs. Chouhan!” This is my schedule for this school year: 8-8:15 Drop Everything and Read, 8:15-8:30 Journal Writing & Announcements & Pledge, 8:30-8:40 Circle Time & Calendar, 8:40-9:00 Math, 9:00-9:40 PE, 9:40-10:00 Snack, 10:00-10:15 Phonics, 10:15-10:30 Shared Reading, 10:30-11:00 Literacy Stations, 11:00-11:30 Free Stations & Guided Reading Groups, 11:30-12:00 Lunch, 12:00-12:15, 12:15-12:30 Math Action Songs, 12:30-1:00 Library, Skill Groups, or Phonics Songs, 1:00-1:30 Science or Social Studies, 1:30-2:15 Nap, 2:15-2:30 Music, 2:30 Dismissal -Andrea

I have just been asked to take over a kindergarten class of 20 four months into the school year. This is my first time teaching Kindergarten and the teacher did not leave lesson plans for the upcoming weeks. I have been searching all over the internet and FINALLY came across Lesson Plans that I CAN work with and that I LOVE but I need Months 5 through the end of the school year. I found your lesson plans very interesting. i am a VPK teacher in Pasco Florida and I am always trying to second guess what Kindergarten teachers expect from their students. We have the Florida VPK standards that guide us in the various areas of instruction but,, I like to give my children a little edge that will make their learning experience more enjoyable and better prepare them in their future educational life. If you can give me any advice oor ideas that will help my children prepare them self for kindergarten I would definitely incorporate them into my lesson plans. Thanks Carol

Oh, wow, I don’t know where to begin. I also taught Pre-K in a full day format and I remember wondering those same questions. For Math, I would suggest rote counting aloud as often as possible. In the area of Literacy, I encourage you to set aside time each day for your students to view, hold and enjoy looking at books. For Phonics, engage them in songs and rhymes via the internet/Smartboard/cd/cassettes, etc…. In the area of fine motor, give them tons of opportunities to write with pencils, crayons, markers, paintbrushes, etc…. When children arrive to Kindergarten with poor fine motor skills such as writing and cutting, it really puts them at a disadvantage. So, working with them more or referring them for OT therapy early on is nothing to second guess. I am sure these are ideas you have already tried and already do, but hopefully I sparked a few ideas! I actually do, but not digitally. I believe they are somewhere in my garage…hmmmm….I remember seeing my binders around Christmas time! It would take me forever to scan them or retype them and upload them. They are from 2008 and are for full day. I finished up Month 1 of my updated PK lesson plans. When I was looking back through them, there was just so much updated that needed to be done…and I didn’t like the format. It was way more work than I intended, but I think they are great! They are on my TpT shop now! So, I will not scan them, because I thought my new printer could scan and save to a jump drive, but it doesn’t. It’s just way to much work for me right now – so sorry.

I do have all of my plans here on my website and they are month by month. However, since we have moved to the US Common Core State Standards, I re-aligned my lesson plans to meet those standards. It took me over a year to do that. Now I have them all in one place. Due to the time it took, I was encouraged by some colleagues to share my resources with others through “teachers pay teachers” and so I did. It is a website where teachers buy and sell resources, that they have created, to one another.
